Vacuum

Vacuum

A Poem by T.S. Ulmus

The first thought was just
"I am"
I don't know second
But the third one really hurt
A string of nonsense followed
Like "what if"
or "how"
Blithering nonsense that finds no end
Then only "make it stop"
Perhaps there was some beauty
Flowers and locusts and s**t
Should I taste from the nectar
Or cuddle into the vacuum?

Since I'm studying the daily practice of Buddhism lately, this looks like the typical human struggle to sit still for a while with an unfettered mind. The book I'm reading says to just label these interruptions "thoughts" & return to the mind vacuum without getting into mental name-calling about our inability to train the wild mind. There will always be rambunctiousness in the mind. The goal isn't to get rid of it, but to allow it to go away as we refuse to pay attention to it, like a naughty child. Yesterday I read someone's poem about how hard it is to be on covid lockdown becuz of the wild ramblings of an untamed mind. When I first moved to the wilderness alone 10 years ago, I felt crazy not having the usual distractions for a wild mind. It can take years to train the wild mind & people that have gone on lockdown suddenly can't expect to master mind control in a month or two. I feel for these people. I was lucky becuz I had a 10-year jump on everyone else, learning to live in the quietude & solitude of the wilderness. Sorry for my tangents. I'm feeling very tangential this morning! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

You are always welcome to spill tangents over my landscape, no one's words are so welcome as yours. .. read more
Wow...I think therefore I am but what comes next? All the stupid doubts and anxieties. This poem is phenomenal. It truly is. You have captured something so vivid and personal for me.

I guess cuddling within the vacuum makes the most sense...the years we live seem like moments.
Those of us in older age wonder where it has all gone...so fast, so fast it passes.
Not so much time to find a meaning to us.

Very good write on the random thoughts that we often get. How, when, what, and why? Always searching the meanings of these. ~ Helena ~
