Stranger Than Fiction

Stranger Than Fiction

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

Life is stranger than fiction.
Reality is often more bizarre
Than the most outlandish plot
With corkscrew twists and turns
Ironies and coincidences
That any novel reader, coming across them in a book
Would frown and say -
“Pffh! Yeah right!”

What are the mysterious influences
That govern the fates of men?
That lead us on paths divergent,
Just to throw us together again?
Who makes sure our lives are ironies,
And gives reality a touch of madness?
Ensures all that we value is fallacy,
And tinges every joy with sadness?

I believe
That everything happens for a reason
That our lives follow as charted a course
As season following season.
Destines are - seemingly - parted;
Then, by divine preordination -
Or alignment of stars -
Are brought together again.

In modes, in methods,
So fantastic, so unbelievable
Stranger, even, than fiction…

Frankly, from anyone else, I'd call this 'good work' at least. But you can write a great deal better than this, and I've read it, so...
It lacks neither truth nor artistry. It lacks spirit.
