Angst

Angst

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

We torment ourselves
With desires and fantasies
We tantalise ourselves
With impossible dreams and improbable hopes
We leave behind those who love us
To chase after butterflies, who disdain us
We leave the earth - which conceived us -
To reach for the stars, which wink at us contemptuously…
It’s a longing, an ennui -
An angst -
A wanderlust…
That burns from deep within
Eats us up from inside out
And our hearts overrule our minds
And Passion defeats Sense
Faith defeats Logic
And Delusion triumphs over them all;
We make wings of feather and wax
And attempt to reach the sun
We mix bricks of clay
And try to reach the heavens
We shake our fists at Fate
And laugh at our own mortality
Like ‘this season’s daffodil
Who neither knows nor fears
What change, what chance, what chill
Cut down last year’s…’
We, who season after season
See the flowers bloom and fail
Say, “See how our works endure!”
