StatuesA Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe
We’re just ordinary people, you and me
Maybe we are strangers Dancing to the tune of circumstance Dancing to the strings of Fate Like marionettes… We are leaves blowing in the wind, We are butterflies… We’re just ordinary people, you and me Time will turn us all to statues, Eventually. We’re just ordinary people, you and me Maybe we are in love We waltz through life, hand in hand Dancing to the drums Of our synchronised heartbeat, Dancing to the tune That strums upon our heartstrings… We’re just ordinary people, you and me Time will turn us all to statues, Eventually. We’re just ordinary people, you and me Maybe we are enemies Chasing each other through the corridors of life Listening for the twang Of a bowstring; For the whistle of the arrow Tearing through the air… We’re just ordinary people, you and me Time will turn us all to statues Eventually. …And will this youthful liveness, This energetic vigour Fall, someday, into silence, To a still and silent figure? Will the restless form be captured, Will the folds of life unravel Into cold and static sculpture As white, as lifeless, as marble? We are white dwarves Drunk on life’s heady thrill Till the Moiraean thread is broken And everything falls still… We’re just ordinary people, you and me Time will turn us all to statues… Eventually. © 2012 Alvin L.
