The Tube

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

You are feeling sleepy

Yet you are wide awake

Your mind is fast asleep

But your eyes are wide as lakes

You stare blankly;

Stare at the flashing screen

Wide-eyed, blank mind;

Mesmerized.

You take it in; the images, the sounds

They are such magicians -

How they hold us in their spell!

They can chill us, horrify;

Make us break out in gooseflesh

They can make us smile,

Make us love,

Make us hate…

And we’re so easily scared

Like a flock of geese

When they say ‘boo!’ we run for cover

Like a proper gander

When they feed us with their lies

And their propaganda…

He rules the minds of men

Who rules the airwaves.

We tune in, get indoctrinated

Of our own accord

And we believe every single word

As if the transmissions come from Heaven;

We let it think for us,

Navigate our lives;

And when our society crashes and burns

All that’ll be left

Will be the little black boxes…

It determines what’s cool,

What’s in, what’s out -

It defines our morality

Shapes our opinions

Changes our perceptions

Our values, our expectations

Barrage upon barrage

Of the sublime and the subliminal.

Advertising gimmicks

Picture-perfect celebrities

And ‘reality shows’…

Like; why are you watching that

When you can live your life for real??

Surely we are the real thing,

And they are the illusion?

Eat this, think this, love this

Hate that, this is cool, that’s not,

That’s hot, more skin, less mind,

More drugs, more guns, you’re gangsta now!

More ice, more bling

‘Get your Jesus piece on, show that passion for ice!’

He’s on their chests, but in their hearts

There is no passion for Christ

Fast money, faster cars,

More money, a couple models

Televangelists, talk shows

Celebrity news -

That’s why they call it

Television programming…
