Goodbye SeasonA Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe
It’s goodbye season
Characterised by clouded expressions Wet, salty showers And strong, blistering winds To swell the sails of awaybound ships Or rather, lift the aerofoils of awaybound Boeings And to chill to the bone the shivering form Of the left-behind-one Handkerchief waving Like a windsock. It’s goodbye season And the thermostat reads That horrid, icy feeling When the time to part has come The air is saturated - Pregnant with the words you wanted to say But your tongue gets in the way So you say something lame, like “See you soon, take care…” And you kick yourself forever… It’s goodbye season And that swelling in your chest Has barometers bursting From the pressure Aeroplanes taxi You get in the taxi; Your eyesight is dimming ’Cause your eyes are swimming And your pillow’s reading for the night - Infinite millimetres of brine… © 2011 Alvin L.
