This Is Your Life

This Is Your Life

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

This is your life
Are you who you want to be?
This is your life;
Is it everything that you dreamed it would be
When you were younger,
And you had everything to lose?...

Do the tortured screams
Of broken dreams
Haunt you every night?
Has the critics’ derision
Stifled your ambition
And clouded up your sight?

Can you look back, and be proud
Of the path that you’ve come down -
Did you make the right choice?
Or are you looking around
For some way to drown
Your conscience’s accusing voice?

If that little boy or girl
You were when you were young
Could a glimpse of the future borrow;
Would she stare, aghast
Creature from the Past
At the Horror of Tomorrow?

Our triumphs, our mistakes
Shape the course that our life takes
Over Chance and Fate we have no power
But our choices, our minds
Ultimately determine
Who we are.

This is your life:
Are you who you want to be?
This is your life;
Is it everything that you dreamed it would be
When you were younger
And you had everything to lose?

We are who we are
And we are who we choose to be
We are only young once
You only get one chance
To make of yourself what you will...

This is your life.

This was my favorite line...especially Creature of the Past and Horror of Tomorrow...

The finality you've put to it leaves the reader in a very tight spot (as usual with your work). I thought about it harder than i thought i would have (tongue twister)...and i'm lucky i'm a surly 19 years old so i'm guessing the effect this will have on a 30/40/50 year old...haunting really.

Though i think we cannot tell which path is the right one most of the times. I'm told that travelling in a straight line might mean that you will make it faster to your destination but you might have missed the most important thing with this...Experience and Wisdom....anyway i feel like i'm rambling so i'll just end this like you always end your piec....

Now this is awesome!!!
I have not always chosen the right path to take in my life, and am not proud of those mistakes. But I am proud in that I learned from those mistakes. It would be so nice if we always took the right path and never made mistakes. But now that would just be the perfect little world or the perfect little me. Dont see that happening, lol.
I truly enjoyed reading this, such truth, inspirational, such wisdom.
Awesome piece.
