DirgeA Poem by Alvin L. KathembeWhen the past is just a haze In a memory dimmed with age I will look back on these days And smile. When my days are turned to night, When age darkens my sight I’ll remember with delight Your smile. When a bomb could go off as near As a metre from my ear And still a sound I could not hear I’ll remember your laugh, my dear And smile. When age leaves my lungs so weak That I can’t stir a breath to speak I’ll remember how your cheek Felt against mine… And finally when I lie And raise my eyes up to the sky And the time has come to die; I’ll bid my heirs not to grieve All my enemies forgive And remember how we lived… And smile. © 2011 Alvin L.
