Dirge

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

When the past is just a haze

In a memory dimmed with age

I will look back on these days

And smile.

When my days are turned to night,

When age darkens my sight

I’ll remember with delight

Your smile.

When a bomb could go off as near

As a metre from my ear

And still a sound I could not hear

I’ll remember your laugh, my dear

And smile.

When age leaves my lungs so weak

That I can’t stir a breath to speak

I’ll remember how your cheek

Felt against mine…

And finally when I lie

And raise my eyes up to the sky

And the time has come to die;

I’ll bid my heirs not to grieve

All my enemies forgive

And remember how we lived…

And smile.

I love the air of this poem. It's so...gentle, soft. The mood is so relaxed, and warm. It's almost like sunlight itself or something. Reading this put me at ease. I don't have much more to say except that it's comforting. Mechanics and word choice wise, it's fantastic, and I certainly love the ending. If anything, this portrays a descent into a sense-deprived world and eventually death, but is nothing but uplifting. It's odd, but certainly enjoyable. Love how you presented this. Great job.

This was like a release of accumulated years of words.

I think i matured a tad as i read this :)

"When the past is just a haze
In a memory dimmed with age

And smile."

This was really something man...kudos...
