M.E.NA Poem by Alvin L. KathembeWe are men; And we have feelings too But we hide behind our ruggedness And our manly shrugs We’ve been lifting so many weights That we finally worked out That the only way to manage Is to harden that muscle So as not to get hurt And deafen our ears To the whispered palpitations That proclaim our deepest desires… We’ve learnt to ignore Those chemical imbalances; Hormones and all that We can’tcut out the emotions - That’d make us monsters - We just unremembered their names… They tell us men are supposed to be hard - Even when they’re not singing about sex - They tell us that love and compassion Are effeminate And the only ‘manly’, noble emotions are Hatred, malice and greed And that sex is as good As you’ll ever feel… What a wretched organism Whose highest emotion - The peak of his existence - Is but an orgasm And then is on to the next one! Love and compassion Are what distinguish us from the beasts When we lose even that We sink to their level… We’re dehumanising ourselves - Maybe it’s a defence We put up to stave off The hurt and the pain… But what of the day You wake up and find You can’t feel even that Any more?? © 2011 Alvin L.
