Away With The Comparatives

Away With The Comparatives

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe
"

Make the decision not to live your life by other people's standards.

"

Away with the comparatives

Expunge them from your dictionary

What I mean is…er...er...er

Away with the ‘er’s.

I will do my best

I don’t need to be better than everyone else

I want to be happy

I won’t be looking around

To see if I’m happier than others

I won’t have the time

I will find my dreams

I don’t need to find-my-dreams-er…

I will live my own life.

You see, the thing about comparatives

Is that they’re so…relative…

’Cause the whole world could be sad

And you could be relatively happier

But that’s still pretty sad…

You see, comparatives limit you

They turn you into that runner

Whose eyes are not focussed ahead

But is always looking over his/her shoulder

To see how far behind the rest of the pack is -

My life will not  be defined

According to everyone else’s.

I’m not saying “Be only good”

I say “Do your best”

And never be satisfied

Till you fulfil your desires

Just don’t chase after

Someone else’s dream

That’s like grabbing at

Reflections in a mirror

Showing someone else’s face.

Away with the comparatives.

This is just epic! Again with your cheeky flair though there's an important lesson to be learned from this. I'm unfortunately an occasional victim of comparatives and you've magnificently got me thinking. The free verse did the monologue absolute justice id you ask me. Each sentence melted well into the next so it kept a full single reading:) there's nothing i'd change with this poem (as is the case with so much of your work) so keep doing what you're doing. Awesome job:)

another nice one. An element of humour combined with a vein of seriousness - good work.

kinda humorous this one is! well, it made me smile. but it would've been better if it ended with...'er', is my opinion. this one's more like an essay than a poem. it's good though :) nice!
