![]() She Said She'd RatherA Poem by Alvin L. KathembeI asked
her, “Will you
let me hold your hand Clasp
your pretty little palm in mine?” She said, “I’d
rather hold the stolen cub Of an
angry, hungry tigress That’s
just looking up To
identify the culprit.” I asked
her, “Will you
let me wrap my arms around you Will you
accept my embrace?” She said, “I’d
rather walk into the outstretched arms Of a
rearing, roaring, hungry bear And feel
him hold me ever tighter And dip
his mouth to kiss me…” I asked
her, “Will you
let my lips touch yours Will you
let me kiss you?” She said, “I’d
rather kiss the drooling mouth Of a
rattlesnake, all scales and hiss And feel
its tongue flit in and out Than
accept your osculations!” I asked
her, “Will you
give me your heart, Will you
let me love you?” She said, “I’d
rather tear it right out my chest And offer
it, still beating, On some
pagan shrine As
ancient priests chant and dance around.” I think
she likes me. © 2011 Alvin L. KathembeFeatured Review
