I Want To Write

I Want To Write

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe
"

Know the feeling? :)

"

I’m sitting all alone in this room

And all I hear is silence

Punctuated, maybe, by the gate creaking open

To admit some late returner

Or the strange calls of nocturnal birds

And I want to write.

Outside, the darkness is absolute

And the stars are twinkling mischievously

Winking, it seems, at some celestial joke

Perhaps we are the punchline

And even the moon is smiling

With that lop-sided grin of hers

And I smile too, though I don’t get it.

There’s something that I’m feeling

I’ve never been good with those

But I can’t describe it

I grasp for words to express it

But my fingers close upon themselves

And all I speak is silence

Just me here in the shadow.

But now that I think of it

This…dark, still silence…

This brooding, meditating darkness

This calm, lurking shadow

Like still waters that run deep;

This mysterious, unspeakable night

This is it; this is the feeling…

And now I’m just as confused

As you are.

I got chills from your last stanza, quite literally. I thought you did very well conveying the emotions simply by setting the scene. Your descriptions were thorough and beautiful.

I loved the concept of the stars laughing at us. It was very unique and creative, something I've never heard of or even thought of before. The way you ended that stanza so abruptly, with a word outside of your rhyme scheme, was great; it was almost like a punchline in itself.

Overall, I really loved this.

"Outside, the darkness is absolute
And the stars are twinkling mischievously
Winking, it seems, at some celestial joke
Perhaps we are the punchline"

Favorite lines. Very well-done. 98/100!

the ending to this poem is very powerful, it leaves you wondering and nodding your head in agreemeant. because i think many writers understand the need to write, yet we never know how it comes about, its just there. great job!

I love this so much!!! It makes me feel the cold of the night, the cool breeze slipping across my skin, and I can feel it in my throat like drinking a cold glass of water. It is so hard when you have a FEELING but you can't write it down. I know this feeling, that awful yet amazing feeling. I think I could read your poems over and over a million times. Really - I think I could. I especially love the ending. "And now I'm just as confused as you are." I LOVE that sososo much. This is a powerful poem, here, and amazing poem that just... It's indescribable, so I'll just say I love it.(:

These lines are damn ingenious bro. I always think you've outdone yourself then you go ahead and prove me wrong! Your words punch me on and on to the ending and i really enjoyed that you got me to read a whole poem about a feeling you 'can't describe'...This was amazing work. I'm jealous

This is very good! It is so hard to bring to life the feelings within with words that convey their true meaning. Well Done!
