The Last PoemA Poem by Alvin L. KathembeReally thoughI’m
broke as a broker who backed broke stocks I’m
broke as the water of a new mother. I’m
broke as a jester who knows no jokes You
and I, we broke one another.
My
heart is in pieces like the words in my poems My
heart will never know what peace is, like a general’s son. My
heart is in pieces, like the remains of a bomb My
heart’s in the stars, like the constellation.
Yours
is the name that’s sweetest on my tongue Yours
is the loveliest, most beautiful name. Yours;
the name that reminds me what it means to be young Yours
is the name I will never name again.
This
is the last poem, the last page I will waste This
is the last poem - I shall tear it in two. The
last poem in my mouth, to wash out the taste: The
last poem, the last poem, that I shall write about you.
