Hostis Humani Generis

Hostis Humani Generis

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe
"

Who is man's enemy?

"

We are always looking for excuses to exterminate one another.
We lump our fears into brackets and stick labels on them
Painting thousands and millions with one broad brush.
Racism, tribalism, patriotism - and all kinds of other '-isms'
Are each a device of artifice
To trick ourselves into thinking
That we're better than everyone else.
We huddle in our little phalanxes
And wage war upon the world
With closed ranks and closed minds,
United in our fear of the Other.
Perhaps we'll only be happy
When we've exterminated everyone but ourselves.
Just talk to Luos about Kikuyus
Or to a Hutu about the Tutsi,
Or ask a Nazi about Ashkenazis
And you'll see.

We've remoulded God in our image -
Murderous and narrow.
Because the same God who is wide enough
To encompass the entire Universe
Is yet unable to accommodate the diversity
Of this earth which He created.
God, who formed the firmaments,
Whose very exhalation is a nebular cloud
From which galaxies come into being
Needs you, puny human, to punish those who you deem to have slighted Him.
But would you plead for God?
Would you save Him?
The audacity of your blasphemy
Is that you assume God cannot avenge Himself.
You are duped by wolves in shepherd's garb
Who have garbled up the Word.
I see satanic pastors
Using a loving God to preach devilish hate -
I see saitan's sheikhs
Fleecing the sheep;
I see State-sponsored terrorists
And terrorising wars on terror.

Stand united against the arsenals;
Your enemies pit father against son
And son against father
Like United versus Arsenal;
Brought together only by slaughter,
The subjugation of your daughters.
And it is you against the world
And all the world against you;
Every man for himself
And God's hand heavy on us all
Everyone else a rival
And everyone else an enemy
I against you, and you against me,
Hostis humani generis

We are of course our own worst enemy; it'll be ok though, once we've gone the way of the Dinosaurs this lovely planet will soon recover. T
