Brutus

Brutus

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

False friends lie and say
They have nothing but the best of wishes for me.
They only want to see me smile
So they can kick me in the teeth.

'Together till the last!' they say.
'We look out for one another.'
But how quick they turn, when I turn my back;
How quick they draw their daggers!

They guard their expressions carefully,
They are actors of great skill.
They watch, they rise, when I drop my guard,
To move in for the kill.

They laugh and smile; they flatter, beguile
Yet secretly mock me, with the rest.
They pray for my disgrace, but to my face -
"We wish you all the best!"
