Janus

Janus

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

We marvel at the urgency
Of Father Time’s march
And wonder how in the world
We are meant to keep up with him.
Just when did our tomorrows
Melt into yesterdays?
Strangers stare back at us
Out of mirrors;
Our minds struggle to keep up
With our bodies.
Soon the old calendars shall be thrown out
And a pyrotechnic false dawn
Shall light up the sky
And usher in the new year.
As we trudge through the debris
Of a broken past,
Groping and stumbling towards
An uncertain future -
May the dark of doubt be a thing of the past;
The sun will rise upon no new fear.
May you see the world more clearly
Than you ever did before
With a new year’s resolution.

As surely as tomorrow
Ripens into today
May your dreams find fruition.
May your troubles pass as quickly as
The sands hurtle through the hourglass.
May your future be bright,
And your memories fond
May your triumphs be sweet -
May you learn from your defeats -
As the days fly,
May you ride on their wings;
May your face always be lit by a smile.

“For we’re nothing but mere grains of sand
Upon life’s vast, glassy shore
Just two grains among the thousands
Upon thousands, and thousands more…
Hoping, before the day is done
To get our moment in the sun,
So let’s bask, and shine, and love, and teach;
Leave an indelible imprint upon the beach
For there’s a crashing, foaming tide
That breaks upon the ocean-side
And washes in while we’re asleep
To swallow sand-grains in the deep…

Let’s bask, let’s shine, let’s love, let’s live
And be all that we’re destined to be.
Before time, that wave that laps on life’s shore
Washes in, and all out to sea…”
