Pilots Are The Great Evangelists

"So go ye therefore..."

Pilots bring us closer to Heaven -

A little bit of turbulence

Is often more convicting

Than the most heartfelt sermon;

Turning even the staunchest skeptics

Into believers.

Pre-flight safety videos

Have bolstered the faith of millions

And made countless atheists

Reconsider their stand -

Everybody needs Jesus

In the unlikely event

Of a cabin depressurization.

 

We would rise and soar on Icarus’ wings

Shaking our fists at the gods

But find ourselves muttering

Frantic, heartfelt prayers

When we’re sick; or afraid;

Or on an airplane.

 

The devil’s in the terminals

Where we chuck our rediscovered faith

Along with the airsick bags

And we’re back to quoting Invictus again -

 

“…In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced, nor cried aloud…”
