Demon Days

Demon Days

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe
"

...a long time ago.

"

Demon days; angel nights -

Because the days were so real

And the nights were mine to dream,

To forget, to remember…

Demons dogged my waking thoughts

Despair bedeviled my every step

Anger haunted my every breath -

Afraid, frail, alone in the Wild

Unsure, hopeless; a wreck, a child

With none to turn to for comfort,

With none to trust for advice;

Just Doubt and Discouragement whispering fears

Into the lost little child’s ears…

Even now I shudder to think

Of the chasm whose lip I looked over,

Of the abyss that opened at my feet.

But I was plucked from that hole,

And given a dream

Through night’s deadly darkness

Shone a hopeful beam;

Even as I seek the sun’s rays

I look back at the blackness

From which I was raised;

Even as I seek out the light

Never -

Never -

Will I forget the night;

The darkness of the demon days.
