The SingularityA Poem by Alvin L. KathembeIn the beginning God created the Universe All of matter sprang up - Out of nothing - At His command And He flung the worlds apart And set the galaxies in motion His breath was a nebular cloud That condensed into stars Like little droplets Upon the window-pane of Time And His voice rang through The cosmos Like a Big Bang And all of Creation Followed his laws. What words could Moses find To describe the vision? How could he fit his Hebrew tongue Around quantum fluctuations Anthropic principles Uncertainty principles Special relativities; Or wrap his head around E=mc2? How could he explain To a generation of sceptics That if the electron carried a charge A fraction higher, Or a fraction lower, It would not have been possible For stars to form? How could he know to point out That the Universe was set To expand at exactly the right rate; That if it had been a fraction slower - By one part in a hundred thousand million Million - The macrocosm would have collapsed On itself? Even now, we don’t fully understand; Our intelligence cannot explain Or our minds grasp The mysteries of The Beginning - Our insatiable minds delve deeper Ever seeking to know more; Where the laws of Science break down And reason fails us Obscured by a primordial cloud So dense that our minds cannot penetrate it - Lies the very mind of God; The Creator, The Singularity. © 2013 Alvin L.
