The Revolution & YouA Poem by Alvin L. KathembeSaid the Revolution to the Underclass; “Shall your oppressors rule over thee? Come, shake off your masters! Break away! Break yourself free!” Said the proles to the Revolution: “The election year is imminent And though I’m sure I’ve said this for years, This time it will be different And our Man shall dry our tears. All we ask for is an Opportunity A chance, an education To uplift our community And put an end to our stagnation Our beloved Leader will bring this to fruit; He will cure us of our illness Jobs shall fall in the laps of our disenchanted youths And computers in our childrens’.” Said the Revolution to the middle class: “Open your eyes, and look around Do you see all the injustice in A world that’s upside down?” Said the bourgeoisie to the Revolution - Hitting ‘pause’ on the remote control - “Indeed, the world is in a bad way And it so vexes my soul That so many can have so much And so many have so little. We live in a world where no-one is free, Where we spy on one another Where Big Brother is watching me As I am watching Big Brother - Like, oh my god, did you see How Kim got Ye A motherfreaking Lamborghini?? Man, we’ll get there one day. What were we saying? Oh, of course; The World, and Life, and things Of course I’m in for a Revolution - Will there be drinks?” Said the Revolution to the Upper Crust “Are you not satisfied yet? How much more do you want before you take Your yoke off your brother’s neck? Shall you live in marble houses While they wallow in the mud? Shall you profit off their sweat And live upon their blood?” Said the Aristocrat to the Revolution - “’Tis the way it’s always been; The rabble in their place, and we in ours What more could the rich and powerful want But more money, and more power? You say that they are suffering? Can it really be that unpleasant? I can’t see the slums from my golden gates And I don’t know any peasants.” Said the Revolution unto me: “Open your eyes, do you see?” I knit my brow into a frown Tweeted about it on my phone And said, “I will write a poem.” © 2013 Alvin L.
