By the Lazarus Pit

By the Lazarus Pit

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

Gambled, lost, and paid the price;

Still smarting from the pain,

I retreated from the battlefield

To wait for my bruise to wane

I’d hardly gotten over it

Before my curse and bane -

Cupid with his blasted dart

Aimed for my heart again.

That little scoundrel must've been

In league with the shadows -

He used a cloak of subterfuge

To camouflage his arrows

She tortured me with her whispers,

Her eyes put me on the rack

But that smile of hers was the final straw

That broke our hero’s back.

Her face flits in and out of view

My heart flutters like the breeze

The heart melted, which was so cold

They’d called me Mr Freeze…

You dance in the electric light

Of this dark night.

Now I’m dressed up all in black

To reflect my even blacker mood

I hear you’ve chosen over me

Some ‘safer’ two-faced dude.

Now, I’m rarely smiling

And my heart in two is rent

I wonder how my confidence

Can suffer such a dent…

Life is quite the mocker, yea

Fate is quite the joker -

It creeps up on us like a cat burglar

Robbing us of all our dreams

Maybe someday we’ll find a sanctuary

Beyond Time’s crashing streams…
