The Last

The Last

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

Are we the last living souls?

The next generation

Will be a digital one -

Digital embryos in digital placentas

Enmeshed in a world-wide web.

Are we the last living souls?

The next will be a generation

Of memes, of hashtags,

Of 5000 followers

And 0 friends.

The next world will be a world

Of virtual friends, who are virtually strangers;

Where avatars and handles -

Carefully constructed profiles -

Will live in our stead.

Are we the last living souls?

this came to me via the world-wide web, on a digital writer's platform....a little Huxley nuance to it with the brave new world pushing to come out. The progress of technology itself is neutral in my opinion, how people incorpate it in their life style is the more topical issue...

You carefully use the words of the information age to ask pointed questions about our barely-evolved-past-stone age bodies. There are some crushing blows landed: the web as a foetus, all followers and no friends, and -- my favourite -- 'virtually strangers'.

It's certainly worthwhile to ask this question.

Nice poem Alvin. It is funny how the advancement in technology, meant to enhance communication, is what inhibits meaningful relationships. while it is a blessing it is also a curse...
