Starlight...Star-lies

Starlight...Star-lies

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

An overdose of the grandiose -

These dreams have got me reeling

Boundless horizons I’ve set my eyes on;

My ambition knows no ceilings.

I climb, on wings like Icarus

There’s no restraining me

Soar, fly, on high - clouds rushing by

To reach the stars that call to me.

Twinkling with lies, these celestial eyes

How they glitter to deceive!

How we strive, o how we rise,

We who their falsehoods believe!

The air, it thins, how high I am!

Now I falter in my climb

Now the glittering jewels seem as fake

As the wings strapped to my limbs.

I can’t climb any further - I have reached

The limit of my strength

As far as ever, set in the ether,

They bat their pretty eyelashes hence.

Go on, mock the celestial joke;

Man, doomed to despair

Reaching, ever reaching for the stars…

Clutching at thin air.

I really liked this. I especially liked your reference to Icarus; definitely set a specific mood for the rest of the poem. Your word choice was great, as usual. The rhythm of the poem did not disappoint. Last stanza was a nice punch to the end. Overall, great piece.
