The Fish and the Serpent

The Fish and the Serpent

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

We were given life
We discovered how to kill
We were given a world of peace
And we made war upon it
We were given Love
And we perverted it
We refused the fish
For the serpent.

We were given Truth
So we made churches and religions
And soon the words of peace and love
Come to us from Above
Meant to light our hearts
That we might be saved
Became instead fuel
For jihads and crusades
We made Inquisitions
And brought to their knees
Those who rejected
Our gospel of peace
We hid behind our crosses
And this God, who saves,
To make of new cultures
Colonies and slaves
What little Truth remained
In our defiled verses
We perverted to swell
Our pride and our purses
We made the road to Heaven -
That hard and narrow way -
A procession of slaves;
An auto-da-fe...

Have you ever taken a minute
To marvel at how beautiful the earth is?
Every day, Science
Uncovers some new miracle.
This is our home,
We are it’s custodians
The earth has been raped
By those entrusted to be her guardians
We set out, loaded rifles, for Africa
Or anyplace relevant
For ivory, to make carvings
Of near-extinct elephants
Walls adorned with Bali tigers
Eyes lifeless and cold
In the summer, massacre mink seals
To make winter coats
Proud sons of Nimrod we!
Such hunters of distinction!
Where’s the Atlas bear today? -
Hunted to extinction.

Every gift that we were given
We have given over to the perverse -
We were made intelligences
And used our cunning to devise
Atom bombs, and Holocaust
We were given Music
And we use it to glorify violence,
And degrade women -
We were given Art
And we made snuff pornography
To satisfy our insatiable hunger
For abomination.
We delight in others’ pain
We take rifles to classrooms
And young women on busses
Find themselves on a ride to Hell…

But not all of us -
Not me, and not you.
We stick to our duty
To heal the world’s hurts
And preserve the earth’s beauty
Islands of peace in turbulent seas
Keep your feet firmly grounded;
Upon the isle of Good, through life’s storms,
By seas of evil surrounded.

The earth is sick,
Sick with a terrible disease
How long can she endure?
Humanity’s the virus -
Love is the cure.

This is simply beautiful and played in my head like a melody, it was an incredible read filled with many truths. I really liked each line because they each had deeper meaning than the words themselves, but this one in particular lingers in my mind and it's this,

"This is our home,
We are it’s custodians
The earth has been raped
By those entrusted to be her guardians"

This speaks volumes to me because I feel exactly the same as these lines; we were put here on this earth to protect her, nurture her, and protect all within - guardians, and yet we are nothing more than rapists, destroying said earth and all within it. We think we are more powerful and more important than the earth that holds us all together, the animals are all beneath of and no one remembers the importance of trees, flowers, and natural healing or organics. It's sad, what this world has come to but it also shows me that ends are near.

Thank God for people like you, keeping truth and knowledge available to the ignorance of this world and keeping us regulars, sane as this world slowly takes us one each day and I do not know about you... but I do not wish to go insane because the rest of the world is so "jacked up". God bless you and thank you for sharing this with me.
