Disillusioned, DisenfranchisedA Chapter by Alvin L. KathembeNever put your faith in a snake Vipers form democratic parties Which are really personality cults - Built around people, not ideas. Politicians form alliances - Political marriages of convenience; Join in unholy matrimony Not with others of like mind, But with whoever will offer them The largest slice of the national cake Some will even side with criminals If the price is right. Sworn enemies Make for strange bedfellows - Just five years ago My people were instructed To kill their people Our leaders told us they were the enemy This time around That same leader Is backing their leader And suddenly we’re friends again. The Politics of Mathematics The formula for victory Is to divide the country tribally Make them take the real issues Out of the equation; Add some fancy slogans To multiply our followers Make sure they don’t realize Something doesn't add up When I say our people are being finished By years of incompetent governance Yet I’m asking to be your MP For the fourth consecutive time… That’s why years come and years go And everything stays the same Nothing ever changes Because of me and you. Yet Parliament is supposed to be A representation of the people, no? A cross-section of the best Our society has to offer… A reflection of the people, Of who we really are ’Cause we voted the best of us To be our voice… So when the August house Is filled, all year round With liars, thieves and murderers, Thugs and pilferers, Semi-literate, hate-propagating Closed-minded, ignorant charlatans… What does that say about us? © 2015 Alvin L.
