King of Clubs

King of Clubs

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe
"

Lupe Fiasco-inspired. Just a bit of fun.

"

Not too prolific on the nightscene -

I’m not the king of clubs

Just trying to stay at the head of my suit;

Like the king of clubs

Not yet an ace,

I’m still a novice

Trying to cling to my virtues

And hold on to no vice

One eye on the past

Yet looking ever forward

Facing back and forth -

Like the king of clubs -

So when life sets me on my head

I’m still upright

Trying to rid my mind of darkness

And fill my soul with light…

Sometimes my thoughts shine

Like when a grimy gem is rubbed;

Sometimes my thoughts are blacker

Than the king of clubs

Sometimes my lines are simple,

And one reading is enough

Sometimes you need two heads

Like the king of clubs

When the meaning’s beneath the surface

Like a sub.

Sometimes I can be a knave

And impolite as farts -

Sometimes I can be so nice

You’d bet I've two of hearts.

She deserves the very best

Who us tied to me as by bonds

If I could, I’d turn my Queen of heart

Into the queen of diamonds…

I’ll always stand up for my friends -

If you mess with my loves

You get a royal walloping

From the king of clubs

Any detractors of mine

I get rid of in a rush

Wash them down the drain

Call it a royal flush…
