Puss-in-BoxA Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe“A cat is penned in a steel chamber Along with a Geiger counter. There’s also a tiny bit of radioactive substance - So small, in fact That in an hour, one - maybe two - Atoms decay But also, with equal probability, none. If the counter detects any radiation, a flask is shattered Releasing a poison that kills the cat.” Chuckling and cackling the Scientist Rubs his hands with glee - “If the box is opened, an hour later Is the cat dead or alive, tell me?” “What?!" asks Heisenberg, startled That a cat, of all things Should get itself in such an entanglement. He hesitates, uncertain. So does Garfield live? Does Garfield die? Or did he just purr And lick his fur? I guess you couldn’t say for sure You might be right if you said The cat was equal parts alive And equal parts dead… Or maybe opening the door Would cause one or the other to happen? And how could anyone be sure That he was dead, or merely napping? Let’s call it a draw, shall we? “Waaaait…you’re going? You’re just going to leave me here???” Says Schrödinger’s cat angrily. “It’s merely an interesting question for you, I suppose But it kinda sucks for me!” © 2012 Alvin L. Kathembe |
