Counting Blessings

Counting Blessings

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

 I realize that all the days I've lived
Are nothing but lent ages -
I tried to count my blessings
And run out of appendages.

What a blessing life is!
And all the things that come with it!
I tried to count its pleasures
But I ran out of digits.

So, for flowers and sunshine
For the moon, for the stars
I am forever grateful
For this beautiful world of ours -

For brothers and sisters;
For aunties and uncles
For friends and for cousins
I am forever thankful -

For Love and for Triumph
I offer thanksgiving
Even for Pain and for Failure
Which make life worth living -

I have a mind full of learning
I dream to better my condition;
I have a heart that is burning
With hope, with ambition -

I have people who love me
I have youth, I have health
Treasures far more precious
Than any amount of wealth...

I have a roof over my head
A place to shield me from the night
I have paper, I have a pen
I can read, I can write...

I tried to count my blessings
But soon ran out of fingers, out of toes
I'm sure you'll discover the same deficiency
If you tried counting yours!
