For T

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

A score and seven years ago
Something wonderful happened
A bouncing baby girl was born
Her bright brown eyes opened.

Doc pulled you out, and spanked your butt
Then he called for sponge and soap
You yowled and yelled; your little lungs
Were filled with life and hope.

Then by and by you closed your eyes
And forgot to bawl and scream;
Lay your head against Mother’s breast
And dreamed a thousand dreams.

A score and seven years have passed
Those childish dreams are no more
Washed out by Time, that crashing wave
That laps on life’s shore.

Replaced, like new coals, by others
In the furnace of your mind
Ambitions and aspirations;
Treasures for you to find.

Today I wish, I hope, I pray
That their flame shall ever burn
And you’ll - never ceasing to dream -
Find each and every one…
