A Lapse in Release.

In the Beginning

We were kindred spirits.
Our hearts danced
like Fred Astaire
and Ginger Rogers.

We shared compliments,
accolades,
making pirouettes
across a stage of love in
our own
romantic theater.

But somewhere
we missed a step.
The rhythm faltered.

My mirror's reflection
could no longer deny
my doubts.

Our footlights flickered;
the closed curtain was motionless.

Our moods darkened
as though our theater
had become more of an old castle
in ruins
with cobwebs, bats,
and coffins in the
basement.

Before it was all over,

I could have sworn there were
stakes driven
through each of our hearts.
