Is That Too Much To Ask?

Is That Too Much To Ask?

A Poem by Terrence Chang

Suffering and struggling all that is left
Upon the intoxication that I duly rest
To this day I was breathing in smoke
And the needles was touching my vains

You don't know the pain of real solitude
To the path which I am forced to walk
You all say ''Get Over With It !''
Without knowing the actual reasons

I am the lab rat of a subject called 'Depression'
As doctor were only feeding my physical body
With Antidepressant to the spoilt adolescence
Neither meds nor intoxicating drugs gave the cure

No matter where I went or who I met
I have always celebrated alone
Drinking in silence with the four walls
Waiting for someone to knock the door

I truly wish to have a companion
To abolish the wailing heart and despaired mind
Who will truly understand my feelings
And give a warm shoulder to rest

Is That Too Much To Ask?

No, dear poet, I don't think that's too much to ask.

You touch on a deep topic here, mainly that we try to medicate people in modern culture when the real problem is not chemical imbalances - those are usually the symptom. The real problem is the isolation we have in modern society. We live next to people who might as well be worlds away. It's that way in Japan, it's that way in the US, I imagine it is that way in Mumbai.

To the poet, from one human being to another, I give a cheerful hug and this advice: It all begins with love. In the words of D.H. Lawrence, an author who also explored some of the same issues your poem explores, "Those that go searching for love only make manifest their own lovelessness, and the loveless never find love, only the loving find love, and they never have to seek for it." It's a hard lesson to learn, but oh how true it is.

Regarding the poem, I like the structure and the message is amazing and needs to be communicated. A few minor English mistakes, but I make them too, so who and I to complain. Keep writing.

Solitude and depression at times are synonymous of each other. But once you find your coping mechanism you would be able to turn it to your advantage. Hope that happens soon.

Thank you soo much Avinash for your kind review.
Reminds me of so many stories I heard about teenagers who went through the same thing. Of course, not only teenagers go through loneliness, but it is surely common among that age group.
Had a nice read....

In reaching out, this poem offers a warm shoulder - sharing the experience of what it feels - letting others in. Brave-hearted.

Thank you soo much Solar for your review.
There are as many reasons for depression as there are forms of depression and cohabiting illnesses but the commonality is loneliness - in a world of 7 billion of the same species !!!
You conveyed the feelings of sad desperation and the yearning for contact that the afflicted desire very well here Terrence.

True - true.
i think this is really from the gut...and i think it is sad that people of less kindness and understanding and just so much judgement and all the answers, they think.

easy from the outside looking in to tell others what to do...but with real understanding comes empathy.
