Sati

Sati

A Poem by Terrence Chang
"

A Hindu practice of a widow throwing herself on to her husband's funeral pyre. This is banned but yet it happens in certain parts of the backwards area in our country

"
I have loved you
With all my heart
With all my soul
But I could not die for you
And yet when you passed
Society never wanted me to last
They thought that I was a malediction
And took your life away
You know me well
You knew me well
The widow now wore a white dress
Loosing was anyway hard to brace
Yet they threw me in burning inferno
Incinerating my life right in front of my face
I loved you enough to let you go
But immature traditions only brought me
An immature death to which I oppose

Author's Note

Terrence Chang
In Hindu culture a widow wares a white saree (an Indian dress). The dress symbolize as her colorful life has come to an end. I hope you don't get the wrong meaning of the white dress as getting married again.
Hope you enjoy your read

Chang: It is a very well written poem, and I learned a lot. And no, I am not that sharp, but I do understand the cultural difference of color in dresses and appreciate it. So sad that some believe the wife must leave with her husband. The image is horrible, and to me that is God's choice. The poem flows so well : society didn't want me to last...passed. Now this makes no sense to me; to think of a loving wife having to die at society's desires. But immature traditions only brought me - An immature death to which I oppose - I'm so glad you wrote this and disagree, especially me being American. I wouldn't wish anyone to be angry with me for their beliefs, but I think it's terrible. Thanks for writing! Loved it. Dale
