Love Is A Harlot

Love Is A Harlot

A Poem by C.T. Bailey
"

A fickle seductress....that is love.

"

Love; she is a faceless harlot-

And the betrayer of the blind.

She’s a mistress robed in scarlet,

Sipping the wines of our mind.

Her many suitors come a’ calling,
They are all wishing for her hand.
‘Tis her affections worth their falling?
Ne’er more would they withstand!

All their hands reaching for her favor,
And then clamoring to her bidding.
Would she grant a taste to savor?
If so, a full goblet be then fitting.

She assails a most unassuming gent,
With no hesitation, he gladly gives in.
Crimson lips kissing the wine he sent,
Spellbound, he unaware of his chagrin.

Thirst unquenched for this trusting beau,
She asks for one flavored with his soul.
Her goblet full - his finest vintage flowed,
Aroma uncorked, praises to be extolled.

A temptress fickle, finds his wine unsavory,
His heart broken, for she has drunk her fill.
Glimpsing another – he a picture of bravery,
Trampling his vineyard; his wine will spill.

Good Evening C.T. Bailey...what a wonderful way to start reading on this site, with such a potent sketch of the personification of love at it's dire best.

My fav line: Would she grant a taste to savor?....typical of the tease only to be snatched away. Most likely, at her decision...ha!

Dramatic poet, well done!

I really like your use of wine as a metaphor for the 'blood of love' so to speak. Really quite a unique write - nice rhythm and cadence as well. Lovely description.

Beautiful write. What a way to describe love gained and lost. I was captivated to the end.

Love is a harlot. I've long suspected just that. Reminiscent of so many Romantic poems past. Lovely to read.

I see where you are goign with this..but I guess I can agree by clariying..FALSE LOVE... I have had many of those..such as my ex wife...TRUE love is the anthesis.....but no matter you have illustrated in perfect detail those sirens who shake our ships upon the shoals...while mermaids lead us to safety!

wow what a personification of love lol there is such a beauty in this piece with the imagery that abounds - yet such underlying sadness and a touch of bitterness of a heart abused by love. I think everyone has been here at one time or another; stomped into the dirt by the high heels (or boots, depending on your perspective lol) of love.

Love can be fickle...one must always be on the lookout for a Polly Purebred !

Absolutely love what you did with this poem. The angle you wrote it from is just perfect. Old world with a catchy title. Ack that harlot will be the death of us all. Great write!

It is so hard to write about love (good and bad) and make it sound eloquent. You did a pretty good job with this one. I fancied it. Great work.
