We Are the Invaders

We Are the Invaders

A Poem by Dean

History is our target
and its offerings are all we bear
for there alone rides wisdom,
there alone is gain; the vanquished
are the vanquishers this night,
all gain is loss this night,
and irony prevails. We are the lost;
for all we care, we cannot recreate.

We are the invaders, we the odd ones
tremble in the night
from all the history we made--
our legacy to the naive,
doomed faces in the wind, our plight
as graven in the hillsides,
now reduced to outrage
as a foil to God.

I am thankful for your history and the revelations it conveys. Your age is magnanimous and gallantly gleaming.
