Why Faith?

Why Faith?

A Poem by Dean

Where systems of belief determine
who will ride the coat tails of our
august chieftains into Washington,
I shudder just a little.  Those
who succeed may not depend
on sympathetic creeds, or even read
of some divine manipulation coming forth
to arbitrate their fame.

No, it is strife that brings reward.
For far out over fancied fourth dimension
would be a pained creator
watching life's declension.
To be sure it is not our vision
that will save us, faith or no.

I'm certain that it is the two or three
that we can love most certainly,
the ones we see disclosed before
the near depleted, hesitating
trickle of compassion we may summon
from the flagon of despair.
