Once Upon an Ocean Wide

Once Upon an Ocean Wide

A Poem by Dean

It was to be his last, he thought.
The day began in heat, like all the others
for the past six weeks; he knew the scene
full well around his little boat.
That, too was empty now
but for a single oar.  He lacked
the strength to take it up again,
just to roil the trackless surface
of his world.

And yet once more, he gazed around
the stillness, "Did I see it?
An object floating, yards away!

Only an hour ago."

...just an old and seaworn board.
and on it lay a fragrant flower.

Life is full of those moments when we take our boat out to sea, the sea being life itself. We spend years rowing through the waves, only to wind up on the shore reflecting on a life that has passed us by. I see that fragrant flower as one last dream, the last hope of our final breath. As long as we live, we have hope. Once that's gone, the flower will drift away. Beautiful!

Thanks, Linda!
Not your usual absract introspection Dean. A surrealistic picture somehow...

It probably has some meaning I can't grasp.

no, just what it is. I don't fight 'em, only put them to print.
