I wrote this poem during my philosophy class. (don't worry I still got an A in the class) I swear I was paying attention!!! This poem was inspired by Plato's allegory of the cave and Peter Pan.
It so true that its almost scary "protect the darkness we wove ourselves". This poem can literally be talking about anything! Our own individual lives and choices or even the choices of our government.
I loved the thought and creativity behind this write!
I've often though that we create our own darkness a lot of the time. I think those last three lines really show that. Those first two lines made me think of a cape. Sort of like we sew our shadows right to our backs. This is a pretty cool poem to come out of a philosophy class.

mmhmm I think people create their own darkness (shroud themselves in ignorance) and we fight as slaves to ignorance too, protecting things we assume to be true. Sometimes people never come out of their caves to see the light. The sewing shadows to backs I took right from peter pan -how he sewed his shadow onto him holding onto his ignorance, wanting to remain a child forever, staying stuck.
(You got Plato's allegory of the cave in class? Seems you were educated rather than just taught!) Nice short poem pointing out that we hold onto shadows - maybe negative limiting concepts of identity or knowledge?? For me seeking a sense of reality took me past many half-truths and shadows. I guess we all cling to some shadows - certainly until we recognise them as such.

I used to keep my poetry private until my good friend Shabad encouraged me to read a poem (Curiosity) out loud at Sip This Cafe in Valley Stream. Since then I decided to make my writing public and ge.. more..
