Matthew

Matthew

A Poem by S. C. McDaniel

I wish I could have seen you fall,
I heard nothing of your call.
You left me standing with fingers spread,
You warned of death upon my head.
But why listen to a silly word,
as your feathers fell I heard.
I said I'd wait until the end,
but know my love you cannot spend.
Not until the vows are met,
And our lives are surely set.
You being nothing more but me,
And I to say the less, you see.
I will only hold your heart,
Each feather a single part.
All thats left is the bolt,
I find my heart an open vault.
I see feathers once white, now black,
You hold my eyes, soon with tack.
You love me dear I know so true,
And I to you, my sweet Matthew.
But we cant be, for the lightning falls,
Embrace me, I cant heed to your call.
Love me dearly till my life succumbs,
I say I love you, with the last air from my lungs.
Your wings now black disguise my sight,
darkness in time wont give me a fright.
Good bye for now, until time ends,
in my spread fingers is love that transcends.
