Not an Empty Promise

Not an Empty Promise

A Poem by Mariana Silva
"

Understand, I want to be yours, but not at the expense of who I am.

"

Stand a little taller my dear,

You know that for you, I will always be near.

When you’re broken and unsure,

I’ll be here to make you feel secure.

Life’s more than making promises,

I don’t need your heart today.

Baby, when you’re ready,

I’ll be here with my arms ready to embrace you.

I’m not going to give empty promises,

No matter what others may say.

I believe a relationship should be slow and steady.

Baby, I just want you to love me too.

You called me the other night.

You were choking on your tears,

And it was all I could think about.

Those tears were never meant to be shed.

For you, I will enter any fight,

I’ll be there to scare away your fears

Before you, I shall never scream or shout

Or demand the best spot on the bed.

Life’s more than making promises,

I don’t need your heart today.

Baby, when you’re ready,

I’ll be here with my arms ready to embrace you.

I’m always going to keep my promises.

Even if you decide not to stay,

I won’t go making your world unsteady.

Just tell me, what do you want me to do?

Want me to rope the moon?

Want me to change my clothes?

Want me to follow you wherever you go?

Would you have me be someone else?

I know I may act like a loon,

And that we aren’t too close,

For you, I’d change! Although…

I shouldn’t have to change into someone else.

When you can accept me as I am,

And know that I am what you need…

Without opinions from all of them

I hope reading that, you agreed.
