This poem reminded me a little of walt whitman. The set up is similar. " they are all gone now. Those that knew me when.." i love it. In a way it is despair yet it is oddly positive.
nice introspective piece that leaves the reader trailing off into thought.. the emotion is subtle yet powerful... it creeps in and after you finish reading--are like.. wow... that really hit me... the repetition borders on too much, but seems to have the right balance in this one and I think it adds to the emotion that sneaks in to the heart and tugs at the finish.. overall well done...
Wow This one practically sings the meaning right out to the reader. Those who knew me when speaks of a man full of wisdom, lessons learned and probably a damn good story or two.... :) Those who knew me when and have gone before us..... well, Roger, with age comes the loss of loved ones too.... and I do believe, with all my heart, that we will "see" them again. Good good write! Now, I will wipe my tears, blow my nose and read one of your happy poems :)

Thank you so much for the gracious review. I hope you find one of my happy poems. Did deep!! LOL
I appreciate the repetitive line those that knew me when, knew me as if to say those close now do not know or are no longer there. This was very moving, and it feels very isolated, as if every milestone was set in the soul of those who know us well, I loved that concept.

True...those that know me now don't know my journey...perhaps that's for the best IDK
You brought tears to my eyes. It reminded me of my grandmother who brought me up when I was little. And now of my father who is battling cancer.... They all leave...those who really knew us and our nature, loved us for what we are and whose loving hand helped us to grow. And soon we will be all alone with ourselves. Thank you for this write that brought me a moment of gratitude and love for those that really loved me.

Such an insightful write Rodger, it makes me think, about to be the last person on earth, or the last survivor of your family tree. When time shall reach this moment, I wonder what I would do, or how I would feel... thank you for sharing such a great thought.
