NO LIFEGUARD ON DUTYA Poem by Roger TurgeonThoughts while sitting alone at the beachNo Lifeguard on Duty The beach is now closed there’s no lifeguard on duty Memories of summer fade as does it beauty Swim at your own risk never lose sight of the shore No watchful eye to warn of the rip tides any more Buoys and markers are removed for the season Plastic fences, red tape installed without reason Large rocks strewn about in a puzzling jumble Trip the unwary on their way to a stumble Sand castle remnants now retreat into the coast Consumed by the moats dug to protect them the most Holes dug to China lay unfinished and shallow Footprints to nowhere impossible to follow Passing gulls ridicule me with their screeching cries As the sun’s reflection blinds my half-opened eyes The lonely wooden bench on which I sit and wait Is cold and hard as my inevitable fate © 2014 Roger Turgeon |
