He Tried.....

He Tried.....

A Story by Loewe

The sunlight cut through the window and obscured half her face in a bright blur. So he couldn't tell but he could feel that she was crying. Everything in him screamed for him to reach out and wrap her in his arms but he knew those days were over. This was the end and he could feel it. "But why?" He uttered the question that had hung in the air for so long. Even though he feared the answer to this question more than he did anything.

A long silence and then a sigh. She opened her mouth to speak but then closed it. She really didn't know why. It was just something she felt had to be done. It was nothing he had done. It was something in her that had changed. She stepped from the window to face him. Now that she had managed to clear her tears and swallow the lump that formed in her throat she could manage to face him with confidence. "Because I need to move on with my life." She spoke the words but to her they didn't sound like her saying them. They sounded cold and piercing. Had she really become this?

The words cut him deep and he rose from the bed and stood a foot away from her. She lowered her head to avoid his eyes but he put his hand beneath her chin and lifted her head to meet his eyes. For a moment they stared at one another. It was a moment that lasted ages in his mind. Words, emotions and desires flashed across their eyes. In those few seconds he came to understand why this was happening. It was no any fault of his or any fault of hers. It was just something that happened. He could barely hold back his tears but he knew if he cried here that she would as well and that was the last thing he wanted to see. He leaned in a pressed his lips to her. She tensed at first but then kissed him back.

They stood like that for several minutes. Locked in a passionate kiss that both of them knew would be their last. He pulled away slowly then turned away and headed for the door. He grabbed the door knob then stopped. "Just remember that I tried OK? Will you remember that?" He spoke over his shoulder because he knew if he turned to see her he would never leave this room.

She chocked back another sob as he closed the door behind him. His last words echoing in her mind. Their last kiss still fresh on her lips. Mingling with the tears that fell down her face. She only wished she could understand why things had changed between them. Why things had changed for her. "I'll remember." She whispered to nobody then watched him out the window as he pulled away without looking back.
