BoyProof

BoyProof

A Poem by Sunny
"

regrets of a girl who fell for a guy

"

9/08

Today I put on make-up,

I straightened my hair,

And brushed it 100 times-

Just like people are always telling me to.

My outfit matches

I’m wearing good shoes

My nails are pink, not black.

It’s an odd feeling.

I don’t know if I like it.

It’s different.

And what makes you think

This is all for you?

Am I being too obvious?

I hate the way my

Gut wrenches

When I see you.

It’s not fair of you to do this to me!

It’s not fair that every smile

Can give me chills

That every touch

Makes me blush.

Put me back the way I was!

Before you bought me ice cream

Before we saw that movie I don’t remember

Before I changed myself for you.

Give me

My ripped jeans

Baggy sweatshirt

Greasy ball cap

Muddy shoes,

And I’ll be on my way.

Back to the way I was

Before any of this happened.

Back to when I was

Untouchable

Unbeatable

Intimidating

Fearless

Tough.

Back then

I didn’t have to worry

About boys like you.

Because back then I was

Boyproof.

And I liked it that way.

Your voice comes through very juvenile, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. As a matter of personal preference I don't really like it but that's really not the point. What I get from this is that the speaker, who may as well be the vast majority of American teenage girls, was willing to change herself according society's idea of femininity, whatever magazines tell her will make the boys want her. An important theme for us to consider. At the part where she's talking about going back, I think maybe there are too many words describing going back. I don't think it's necessary to say "back the way I was/Before any of this happened," as you have already mentioned what happened. However, if you feel that it's necessary for flow and whatnot, by all means keep it. And that's all for me. Thanks for sharing this, overall I really enjoyed the read.

Very nicely written! You were clear enough, so that it was easy to understand. So many teens should be able to relate to this.
