You Come First

This is basically about my stepdad and how he turned his life around for us.

We got through the pain and the drama.

And forced a smile through clenched teeth.

You decided to be a child and act like one.

The lies, the drugs, your friends, they all came first.

We came last.

 

When you called me sweetheart I knew it was fake.

When you called her baby I wanted to hit you.

When you said I love you…I wanted to cry.

When you said goodbye,

We came last.

 

She was over you.

She didn’t want you anymore.

Reality struck and the door slammed behind you.

You had your plans ready to go.

We came last.

 

You were back.

Baby I’ll change.

No more drugs.

No more lies.

Only the truth

You come first.

I like the simple and poignant repetition of the phrase We came last..
It really hits home the fact that three little words hold a powerful
message. Even though this poem is not elaborate, it takes us on a
