A Blue Bird Came In My NightA Poem by Sujash I. PurnaAn owl flew late in the eventide At first from a bough and then to a spire of a church I sat below some shades Yearning Crabwise, an amateur reader Of signs, foresights, Then I dipped my eyes in a pond of muse I pared down to my skin on every silent wave And felt the coldness shivering me to the bones When a strange blue bird with its strange blue beak Came in my night, sat perched on the nearest bough Sang her own blue melancholy… To me and I Listened to her aptly She sang of her days… Tender yet full of grace She was a blue-eyed girl With dark gold tress And she never knew the world Outside the one she belonged, her idyllic one She placed her faith in every flower vase That adorned her room... With the flowers she loved so dear… Every blossom she smelt and filled up her heart… Caressed the petals that beamed at her. But once she came across a strange one Stranger it was, With blooms she in her life never had seen. Of juxtaposed colours, of juxtaposed fragrance That she hardly deciphered the real colours In every morn her eyes roamed amid the crevasses Her days became obsessed, nights oblong, She craved to know…she craved to know… Overwhelmed she rushed one night to that outlandish vase Hypnotised and slowly she ran her trembling fingers Thorns shot at her from those uncanny flowers, Bleeding her skin, breaking her dreams She gasped for breath, tears rolling down her cheeks From alabaster she turned slowly to blue Wings grew in her hysteria and thus she now Sat before me perched, a blue bird In an endless night… © 2012 Sujash I.
