A Valentine Debacle

A Valentine Debacle

A Poem by Sujash I. Purna
"

Musings over a bitter rejection of first love...never the twain shall meet...

"

A naive heart basking in a hope of delight

The first glimpse upon the myriad

Of happiness when her face caught my eyes!

Reluctant as always I was

To traverse in the garden of love

In vain; I failed and fell for a girl!

It’s her eyes; a pair of lapis lazuli...

It’s her hair; a cascade of dark brown honey...

It’s her cheeks; like bloom in a field of straw-berries...

Why I lived these years sans seeing such beauty?

But nay, it’s I; a poor lad of a poor country...

I believed in love; that’s all, so did she I hoped

I couldn’t resist asking for her fair hands,

But wonder did I, if I am too unworthy!

Caring naught I knelt down before that fair visage,

Lovers of rose, hardly they touch its petals

Thorns cut their fingertips and they turn away

But I have ventured; amid a crowd of confusion

To grasp hold of This Rose!

This Rose and my heart bled...

A mournful pair of eyes met a pair of eyes stern

Thorns cut my heart apart

She turned back and rose to her ivory tower

Leaving me tumbling into an abyss

Into the Slough of Despond

A tender love trampled by a cruel vanity

And love wanes away on this very day...

Leaving a place for the seekers for an affected emotion

An emotion so paltry...
