For my Love

For my Love

A Poem by Violet O'Brien

Love is like the rose that grows through the concrete

It will weather any storm

Because that is all it knows how to do

Love survives

Because it is greater than just us two

It evolves and grows surrounding all the people around us

It breeds and bares children

It grows old and eventually the people at the heart of this love will move on

But our love will still be here

Long after we have passed

Because we are human

We leave this world eventually

Hopefully for something better

But our love will stay behind

As a mark in time

To say that we were here

That we did what everyone has the capability of doing

We loved one another purely and completely

With all of our hearts and souls

Because we chose to do so

Not because anyone told us to

But because fate collided us together

Like a hurricane to a shore

We became one

In the most perfect of ways

And I wouldn’t trade that for anything

And it is true

If there was the choice between you or our child

On which one to save

I would choose our child over you

But not because I love him more

Simply because we have loved and he has not

He has not yet felt that feeling

That upon meeting someone else you feel as if that person belongs where you are

And I would loose you

Not gladly

But with thanks

For all that you have given me

And the opportunity to help give those same gifts to another

You are my heart

You are my swan mate

You are my penguin that I will spend the rest of my life content with

Not out of convenience

Or because we bore offspring

But because I love you more than I ever thought was possible

And that is enough for me

All I’ll ever need to be happy eternally

Is to just look back on our time together

And to see how totally and completely we have loved each other

Because that is enough in the end

To know that I love you

And you love me

That is enough to make me be able to sleep at night

Safe and quiet

Until the baby cries

And I don’t even mind that

Because I know he is a product of our love

And that he will grow up

And hopefully one day know what a joy it is

To be so in love
