I'll never be your girlA Poem by Violet O'BrienThere's a baby in the attic
Crying in the storm drain She's been stuck there 19 years Watching the water drip down around her She used to listen to the children Playing where she'll never be Tape recordings of butterflies And memories of a life she'll never live Keeping her breath still As the insects want to crawl all over her And she cries inside every time Desperatly trying to hide the feelings Love is a dangerous angel That she just can't place She's found ennui and empathy And lived with hate and abuse She's found lovely ladies with soft skin The kinda torture straight love has never known And she's found a man with devil's eyes That never understands no as an answer And she's growing more and more terrified Of raised hands and loud voices Because she used to be strong She used to be fearless and resilliant Now she cowers, now she hides She's run out of words to say And she's tired of the "I love you" game Tired of being sore and aching Because she feels like she's breaking Ripping apart and tripping Waiting for the ball to drop Waiting for the curtain to fall And reveal the truth That she's never escaped her gutter She's still trapped in the storm drain With the maggots and cockroaches Trying to understand What makes it change From friendship to love And how do you know it's real And not plastic and celophane Because if you keep me in this cage I'll never be your girl... © 2008 Violet O'Brien |
