The Guide

The Guide

A Poem by Violet O'Brien

Life unfolds like a paperback book

Taking toll on everything I behold

My heart was chained the day I was born

It's only fitting that another birth has unlocked it

Showing my heart to the world

Bare and unprotected for the first time

I'd scrolled by the combination billions of times

Those four little numbers were the key

To erase all the pain of memories

And I am thankful

That my heart is free

To love the people that love me

But there is a warning in this guarentee

A free heart like mine

Is full of flame and fire

And if you are not careful you will get burned

Life is fleeting just like time

And I have no regrets

But I am careful where I step

You may try to trip me up

And make me stumble on my face

But my feet are sure and my stride is strong

With you laying at my feet

Because you thought you were in control

You thought you were ruler of the game

But I was orchestrating it the whole time

The quiet girl behind the curtain

Silent until provoked

A wise man once whispered

"Beware my wife,

She is the devil"

And when asked why he was with her he said in return

"What safer place for a man's heart

Than in the arms of a woman

She is the love of my life

I would be lost without her

For this world is hell

And I needed a guide"
