Drive (Chapter 7-part 2)

Drive (Chapter 7-part 2)

A Chapter by Amanda
"

There's more than one kind of drive ;)

"

S**t. S**t damn f**k.

It’s a very good thing that Kat didn’t know what I was dreaming about. I sincerely hoped she doesn’t ask. Nobody needs to know that I dreamt about my best friend naked.

But that’s not why I’m freaking out. I mean, dreaming about naked girls is normal. But in the stupid dream, I’d said, “I love you, Katrina. Forever and always.”

AND SHE SAID IT BACK TO ME!

So now here I was, staring at myself in the mirror. When we had exchanged those words, it felt right. Like it wasn’t just a dream, it was something real. And when I thought about it, everything made sense. I had come to the revelation that I, Jack Nadine, was in love with my best friend, Katrina Whistdain. While we were on the run from psychos and the ‘counsel’.

Great timing, Jack, really.

“Hey! Are you gonna get out of there? I kind of stink and am in need of a shower!” Katrina called through the tiny door. I look at like it had three heads. I took a deep breath and composed myself. I opened the door with a towel around my waist.

“All yours,” I gestured to bathroom and tried to smile, but it didn’t feel quite right.

“Would you mind watching Emma? I can take her in the shower if you want-”

“No, that cools. She’s fine with me.” Emma was sitting on the bed, watching us. “Hey, Emma. I’m gonna change and then we can watch some TV, okay?”

“Okay,” she answered, playing with her clothes.

I put my jeans back on and the flannel shirt. When I came back out, Emma was jumping on the bed. “Having fun?” I laughed.

She just giggled in response. Emma jumped one more time and landed on her butt. “Jack, why are we here?”

“What do you mean?” I asked nervously.

“How come we not at Twina’s house?”

“Oh, some bad people came…” I was at a loss of what to say. “…and the broke some stuff, so we’re gonna have to stay away for a while.”

“Will it be fun?” She asked.

“We can make it fun,” I assured her. I turned on the TV and it showed me the Channel 7 News.

“And yesterday, a family came to their home in Blackwater to find their two daughters missing. They are both underage, which is why the police are giving them a pass for the 24 hour rule. The oldest daughter is seventeen, here is a picture of her now,” They cut to a picture of Katrina and the woman added, “The little girl is six. If you have seen either of them, please contact this number.”

Oh s**t. I glanced outside and looked at the parking lot. A squad car was pulling in. I stood up quickly and gathered our bags. “Katrina!”

“What?” she asked she opened the door, her hair in a messy bun. “We need to go. Now. I’ll explain later.”

She grabbed Emma, and a few bags and we snuck down the stairs. A cop that looked familiar was talking with the same lady from yesterday. He turned his head to glance to the side and I rounded the corner, holding my breath. That’s when I recognized him. It was Marcus from the other day,

I don’t know, I’m at like quadruple s**t, right?

I nudged Katrina toward the back exit. “It will set the alarm off,” she hissed.

“Marcus is already here.” She gave a deep breath, closed her eyes, and tightened her grip on Emma.

A shrill beeping sound filled the hotel, and we bolted. I unlocked the car from far away and we jumped in. I was pulling out as Katrina strapped Emma in the back seat. I saw Marcus staring after us and I thanked my lucky stars that nothing had stopped us. I relaxed slightly in my seat.

“Where to? I’m probably classified as a kidnapper now, since you two are missing.” My voice was glum and I couldn’t help it.

“I don’t know. Just drive, we’ll just have to keep driving.” I could hear the slight panic in her voice and all the happy thoughts from this morning were evaporated.

The cards, the cards, the cards will tell,

Your past, the present, and the future as well,

Just take three,

And take a little trip into your future with me…

I looked at Katrina questioningly. “What? It used to be Emma’s favorite movie.” She picked up her phone, even though I wasn’t sure it was the safest measure. “Hello?”

“MAX?” she sounded surprised. I could hear him talking, but I couldn’t hear what he was saying. “What? No! Of course not! Well… I can’t tell you. Why do you even care? Look, I gotta go.”

I glanced at her again and she just shook her head. “He wanted to know if I was alright.”

For some reason that made me kind of jealous. Oh yeah, I love her.

God d****t, could this get any worse?

When I thought that, I never meant it as a challenge.
